On behalf of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), GlobeScan has just released findings from a global analysis of attitudes to seafood consumption. Across 21 countries overall, the results show that sustainability is a key driver for seafood purchase globally. Seafood consumers consider sustainability  to be more important than price and brand, with nearly three-quarters (72%) agreeing that in order to save the oceans, shoppers should only consume seafood from sustainable sources. Furthermore, consumers are positive that the MSC, and the fishers, retailers and brands...

This article was originally published on LinkedIn. In his book Swimming with Sharks, Joris Luyendijk describes the banking sector as ‘a plane without a pilot’ and with no moral compass. His conclusion however is that the problems which created the financial crisis are not personal, but systemic and if we want a stronger system, we must change the incentives rather than wish for nicer guys. With billions now becoming available for sustainable investments, bankers’ incentives are getting aligned with a greener, more sustainable...

This article was originally published on GreenBiz.com, as part of our Proof Points series of columns. It’s not shocking that research by National Geographic and GlobeScan shows that consumers care deeply about the food they eat and about how it is produced. More troubling is that most feel alienated from the food system. Just one in four consumers globally feel empowered to influence the way that food is produced, while only four in 10 say they have some influence as consumers over...

This article was originally published on GreenBiz.com, as part of our Proof Points series of columns. In our first 2015 edition of Proof Points, we take a look at the impact that a chief sustainability officer can have on corporate sustainability. Successful men and women in business know that gaining internal buy-in for a program is crucial in any organization, but what if there is no one to champion sustainability as a critical component of business strategy? The CSO is the ambassador with...
At the 2014 Mining Indaba Sustainable Development day, Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane (Founder and Chair of the board for African Monitor and Former Archbishop of Cape Town) gave a keynote address setting the tone for a proceeding panel discussion on mining and community relations, stressing the need to bring morality into business decisions with the understanding that profitability needs not to be the only consideration. A common thread running through the discussion that followed was the need for effective, transparent and credible...
Our 2014 predictions blog identifies seven key trends that we think will have particular impact across the sustainability, reputation, brand nexus. We share our forecasts for key consumer and stakeholder trends, examine the challenges that these represent to business, and anticipate how organizations are likely to respond. 1. Social inequality a rising concern.  Evidence from GlobeScan’s stakeholder and consumer surveys supports the notion that social and economic inequality will be key issues of global concern this year. The past week has seen an escalating war of words between big business and policymakers over the taxes paid by multinationals. Apple and Google came under fire from UK and US legislators, while European leaders pledged concerted action to close tax loopholes. However, GlobeScan’s 2013 polling reveals that for the global public, payment of taxes is the bare minimum they expect of companies. Across 24 countries, around a quarter (23%) say they believe that companies’ main responsibility is to pay...
Job losses at Anglo American Platinum and Rio Tinto, as well as the possible liquidation of UK Coal, are just three incidents from recent weeks that highlight the headwinds facing the mining industry, with commodity prices remaining depressed. GlobeScan’s polling shows that the industry faces similar challenges connecting with the general public. In most of the countries surveyed in our Radar global public attitudes tracking, majorities cannot name a single mining company they respect. To some degree this low public profile...
