According to the newly released Sustainability Leaders 2024 Survey, Natura &Co, Patagonia, Safaricom, Tata Group, and Unilever are recognized as top regional corporate sustainability leaders.
When sustainability experts were asked to identify sustainability leaders among companies headquartered in their regions, a large number of companies were mentioned, suggesting a wide variety of perceived sustainability leadership worldwide. Natura &Co dominates the sustainability space in Latin America while Patagonia is top of mind in North America and Unilever is the most-recognized leading company in Europe. Experts in Asia-Pacific are less likely to mention one specific leader, although Tata Group now holds the first-place ranking in this region. Finally, Safaricom is the only company headquartered in Africa and the Middle East that stands out for its leadership according to sustainability experts.
The GlobeScan / ERM Sustainability Institute Leaders Survey captures the perspectives of 484 sustainability experts in 65 countries worldwide on the priorities and forces shaping the sustainable development agenda. The survey explores sustainability leadership across governments, nongovernmental organizations, and companies and tracks priority issues and the most significant recent developments.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Globally, recognized sustainability leadership tends to be focused on European and North American companies. However, a look at regional leaders reveals greater diversity of corporate sustainability leadership.
Operationalization, integration, and collaboration define the current phase of corporate sustainability. In this context, regional leadership reminds us that there is no such thing as a global sustainability agenda and one of the keys to progress lies in better understanding unique local and regional perspectives, needs, and cultures to drive strategies forward with optimal impact.
