Key Takeaways
- Strong demand for change: Over 90 percent of experts say the sustainability agenda needs revision and more than half call for a radical overhaul.
- Opportunity for innovation: With only 6 percent satisfied with the current strategy, there is a strong call to reshape the agenda through bold and forward-thinking solutions.
- A pivotal moment: With just five years left to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, this is a critical opportunity to recalibrate and accelerate impact.
Sustainability at a Crossroads, a survey of 844 sustainability experts across 72 countries conducted by GlobeScan, the ERM Sustainability Institute, and Volans, reveals a pivotal inflection point in the evolution of the global sustainability agenda. Survey results reveal that five years out from 2030 – the year when we are supposed to have achieved the Sustainable Development Goals as set out by the UN – sustainability professionals say a major recalibration is needed.
When asked how they personally feel about the current state of the sustainability agenda, 56 percent of sustainability professionals say that the current approach must be radically revised. Another 37 percent believe that the existing strategy needs to be modestly revised, while 6 percent feel that the current approach works well as is.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Survey results show that experts overwhelmingly agree that the current approach is no longer fit for purpose. With over 90 percent calling for change – and more than half demanding a radical overhaul – we find ourselves at a pivotal moment with significant openness to new approaches to sustainability.
