In September 2016, GlobeScan was excited to partner with Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) to deliver the fourth Living Progress Exchange (LPX). Building on the success of previous LPXs we went a step further with the latest version by holding an online dialogue simultaneously with an in-person panel at the GreenBiz VERGE conference.
Our preparation and planning paid off as we were able to drive a very interesting discussion on the opportunities for and challenges of leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) to advance sustainability.
As with all previous LPX events, we benefited from the interest and engagement of a wide variety of experts, practitioners and opinion leaders. (If you were one such contributor, we thank you again for your perspectives!)
GlobeScan is proud to share the below summary report of the discussion we jointly wrote with HPE that highlights a number of crucial insights, including:
- The significant benefits of IoT to the practice of corporate sustainability, especially around environmental stewardship and greater resource efficiency;
- The benefits of IoT in helping to improve sustainability practices at a systems wide scale, for example in “smart cities”;
- The central role IoT plays in the design phase of products and services, and how it can be utilized to improve efficiency and circularity from the beginning;
- The need for collaboration within the technology sector and across sectors to ensure that IoT solutions are deployed most effectively to deliver sustainable solutions. This includes tackling issues of data security and privacy, deployment at scale and deploying it strategically for the most appropriate challenges.
Ultimately the discussion online and in-person highlighted that IoT can potentially imbue business and other stakeholders with great power. But as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility.
