Canada’s Role in a Changing World
As the geopolitical situation continues to evolve, Canadians are reassessing their country’s role internationally – while the world takes stock of Canada’s influence.
Recent global public opinion research by the Canadian International Council (CIC) and GlobeScan reveals two key findings:
- Canadians want change. They are eager to move beyond a traditional alliance with the United States, seeking a foreign policy that champions economic resilience, climate leadership, and constructive engagement with a diverse range of partners.
- Canada leads in global reputation. Among surveyed markets worldwide, Canada ranks as the most positively viewed country with 85% saying Canada has a positive influence globally, compared to just 15% who view its influence negatively.
This unique combination – domestic ambition for a more independent and forward-looking foreign policy, paired with Canada’s strong global reputation – positions the country to play a leading role in shaping solutions to today’s most pressing challenges.
The CIC’s mission is to provide a platform for all Canadians to engage in global affairs. Since 1928, as a non-partisan, charitable organization, the CIC has provided a platform for citizens to help shape Canada’s place in the world. Indeed, at our 19 branches located across Canada, our volunteers host numerous in-person and online speaker events year-round for our members and the general public. We also mentor and support students through a variety of programs, and further engage with the wider public through our publications such as the International Journal and our online magazine Open Canada.
