The Future-Ready Workforce: Building Human Change Capability in Times of Disruption

GlobeScan and Ashoka recently hosted a webinar exploring how organizations can build human change capability in times of disruption, drawing on insights from our new joint research report.

The session brought together perspectives from business leaders and practitioners to examine how companies can better equip employees to navigate rapid change while contributing to positive social and environmental impact.

Key insights from the discussion:

  • Employee participation is a driver of resilience and competitiveness. The conversation reinforced that engaging employees in solving real-world challenges is not only beneficial for impact – it is increasingly a business imperative. Organizations that empower employees to act are better positioned to adapt to disruption, foster innovation, and strengthen retention in a rapidly changing environment
  • Employees are ready – and motivated – to drive change. The research highlighted a strong foundation for action: globally, 82% of employees believe they can help improve their company’s social and environmental impact. This sense of agency is closely linked to higher motivation, stronger loyalty, and a deeper sense of purpose – both at work and beyond.
  • The challenge is structural, not motivational. Despite this willingness, many employees face barriers to meaningful participation. The discussion emphasized that the primary constraint is not a lack of interest, but a lack of empowerment – particularly limited decision-making authority. This points to the need for organizations to rethink structures, leadership practices, and how decisions are distributed.
  • Impact is most powerful when embedded in daily work. Most employees currently contribute through small, everyday actions or informal team initiatives. Speakers highlighted the importance of moving beyond stand-alone initiatives to more fully integrate sustainability and social impact into core roles, workflows, and business strategy.
