A survey conducted by GlobeScan, on behalf of the World Gold Council, shows that industry stakeholders recognise some of the challenges facing the mining industry and the progress being made in addressing them.
Overall, the findings suggest there is a strong perception that, over the last decade, large-scale gold mining has generally improved its performance in addressing corporate responsibility issues. For example, over 80% of those interviewed stated that they perceived the gold mining industry as now operating in a ‘more responsible’ manner than was the case a decade ago. Worker safety, human resources practices and the economic contribution made by gold miners to host country economies are seen as the areas of greatest improvement.
